After something happens that you feel you need to get over (eventually) use this step-by-step guide:

| Yes, exactly like this. |
Step 1: Cry. Seriously. Cry, scream, belt out your favorite song. Just Fucking Do It! Step one, which should only last a day or two (maximum), is your one and only chance to act like a child. At this point you may do the following: Facebook creep to check the status of your incident, yell profanities, shit-talk, cry (duh), and/or post music videos of songs that bash the person (or people) with whom the incident happened.
Once this step is complete, there's NO TURNING BACK. After this, you cannot cry, or whine, or laugh, or giggle, or cough, or barf, or fart! (Sorry, Despicable Me plays a huge role in my life, my apologies.) But seriously, after this step, you have to take off your diaper and put on some real pants.
Step 2: Get Yo Hurr Did. Studies show that people who recently get pampered are 57 times more likely to be happier than those who have split-ends, bad nails, or bushy eyebrows. (yeah, I just made that up). Go shopping, get your friends together and just have a feel-good time. Wake up early and do your hair before class. Paint your nails fun colors. Wear a witty t-shirt. When people notice something different or new, they tend to compliment it. You need compliments. Self-esteem boosts are super important to anyone who is trying to get over something.
Step 3: Find A Creative Outlet. My personal favorites are: creating a playlist, writing a new song, or reading a book. Find something that works for you. Find something that takes your mind off of your situation for about an hour a day. Escape into a world in which you have zero problems and you give zero fucks.
Step 4: Find Yourself. This step is mainly for a big breakup. You may have been with someone for a very long time and now you're alone. Before you can be happily in a relationship again, you need to put yourself back together. Same goes for embarrassing situations; find your true friends, understand that in 2 years this shit will not matter. Everybody goes through shit; how you deal with it is what makes you, you. Embrace the 'you'.
Step 5: Hold Your Head High. Nothing pisses people off more than someone coming back with their dignity still (appearing) intact. Confidence is key to any situation, trust me, I'm a doctor.
I wrote this for a few reasons. Mainly because I've been told I'm one of the most qualified people to do such a thing. In my first month of college, I received a phone call from a high school friend of mine. He told me how proud he was of me for everything I've done in the past few years. He explained that he had seen me in the lowest of lows, but I always managed to dig myself out of the holes I made and accept responsibility for my actions. For that, I dedicate this post to Ty Sandretto, the best friend a girl could have even if we don't speak for years at a time. I love you, man.
